To my friend Niels and Dedicated to Emily Cliff August 15th 1989- May 5th 2014 Happy Birthday Emmy and Rest In Peace.
It was a cool sunny day in the small mountain town of South Park Colorado people carried on with their lives the same as they had yesterday children going to school adults going to work expecting they would have to do the same tomorrow. But for one student Niels Maurienlund ,his best friend Schan and young Karen Mccormick it wasn't a day to frolic in the snow or light cow pies on fire. No today was something special something they knew they both had to do.
They exited the bakery with a birthday cake in hand and a bag of party goods in the other but this wasn't a joyous celebration they were going to. Today would have been Emmy's 10th Birthday.
The three best friends had come a long way since making peace with Emmy's Death 3 months ago, they had made peace with the fact she was in a better place but there we're still times when the pain would come out. Today felt like on of those days.
Karen had become quite the tag along on many of their adventures since that day on the bus the dirty little girl's smile never failed to warm Niels heart. He owed her in a way since she had shown him that in the bleakest of upbringings happiness and love could still dwell.
"It feels empty doing this without her." Schan said
Niels turned to his best friend and placed his h and on his shoulder. "I know Schan I miss her too but Emmy wouldn't want us to be sad like this today. She'd want us to celebrate and remember all the good times we had. That's what today is about."
Karen hopped and down on the sidewalk as if she was playing hopscotch. "Yeah besides Schan my brother Kenny said she's very happy up in Heaven and always watching over us.
Niels looked down on the dirty disheveled girl and smiled while he did find Karen's belief in Angels to be a little naive in nature. He did have to admit seeing her smile and laugh made sometimes think somehow somewhere it just might be possible. After all it was Karen who helped Niels find the strength within him to overcome his grief and move on.
"I'm sure she is Karen" he said with a smile. "Your right we'll celebrate and remember all the good times we had together just You, Me, Schan and Emmy.
The three of them made their way to the cemetery only to find an unpleasant surprise.
"Oh you got to be kidding me" Schan said. Vampire Kids.
The sparkly makeup wearing douchebags were loitering around the cemetery talking of lonesomeness and heartbreak. But what irritated Niels was the grave they were lounging on. It was Emily's.
"This cemetery is totes a killer hangout" Said a Vampire boy wearing body glitter."
"Yeah it seems to reflect the emptiness of my souls wandering this earth said a Vampire girl wearing leather and a wig."
"I heard this girl died a few months back she was in our class." Said a Kindervamp girl wearing
"GET OUT!"
"Excuse me Per say?" The Head Vampire responded."
"You Heard me Mike get out."
"I do not know who this Mike you speak of is per say?" The Head Vampire said with a drink of clamato juice.
"Oh shut up with the sparkly Vampire crap" Schan said "Your name is Mike Makowski and your loitering around my girlfriends grave like it was some sparkly vampire douchebag coven and stop decorating Emmy's grave with those stupid sparkly stickers.
"That's Vampir Makowski and we weren't hurting anyone we vampires are deep deep spiritual creatures per say and
we were just sitting here...EEP!" Niels had finally had enough and grabbed the vamp kid by his collar.
"Hey watch it I just bought this Coat from Hot Topic." The Head Vampire raised his hands up.
"Listen" Niels snarled through his teeth "I don't want to say anything really bad since Karen's here so let put this in a way you sparkly boners can understand "If you don't pack up and get out of here per say I'm gonna shove a stake where the sun don't shine PER SAY?"
"GET THEM!! At their leaders call the vampire kids hissed their fangs and charged forward.
"I was hoping it wouldn't come to this per say but if you won't leave us in peace we'll just have to teach you some manners per say."
Schan and Niels didn't seem the slightest intimidated. "Bring it on Glitter lips."
Before the fight could begin there was a bright flash of light that blinded everyone. When the light faded there stood a girl in a blue beanie with a red poofball on top her tousled long brown hair. She wore a black winter coat with a purple collar and matching gloves, black thick frame glasses on her face and dark blue pants with black shoes. but the most striking thing about her was the golden halo floating above her head!
Everyone's jaws collectively dropped in shock the girl seemed to float in midair her face looking down at the ground below.
"I-I-It c-can't-be" Niels Stammered out he and Schan still had the letter she had written them but after they're hearts stopped pounded from the near fatal collision that day about two hours give or take they had come to the conclusion that Emily had written it on her deathbed and Kenny had forgotten to give them. Emmy always had a sense of humor even in the hospital with all those tubes in her she never failed to crack a smile or tell a joke when ever Niels and Schan came to visit her. He never imagined that she'd written it from beyond the grave.
Schan was left speechless his trembling hands trying with all their strength not to drop the cake he was holding.
For several moments the graveyard was silent the Girl floated there above Emily's grave like a shadow. Finally one of the Vampire Kids got the courage to walk up to her his knees shaking with each step he took.
"Excuse me M-miss?" He reached for her coat sleeve with a trembling hand as if he was reaching out to touch glass.
She looked up at him slowly and with a face straight out of a horror film let out a ear piercing shriek.
Her eye sockets were black empty voids her skin was pale and lifeless her nose nothing more than a hollow two holes but her most frightening feature was her mouth which opened like a venus fly trap filled with rows and rows of shark like teeth!
The Vampire kids ran out of the cemetery like it was movie theater showing Vampires Suck shrieking bloody murder as they left puddles of urine and spilled clamato juice behind. Slowly she turned to Niels, Schan and Karen who were huddled together for dear life.
"YOU FORGOT MY BIRTHDAY NIELS MAURIENLUND!!!" The she demon shrieked. "NOW I SHALL HAUNT YOU FOR ALL ETERNITY!!!"
Seeing the cake Schan had dropped Niels quickly picked it up picked off the blades of grass and held it up to her like it was a crucifix.
"W-W-We didn't forget your birthday d-did we guys?" Schan and Karen shook their heads. "P-please Emmy please don't haunt me anymore I tried to be the best friend I could remember all the good times we had together? Doesn't that count for anything?"
The she demon looked down on him and smiled before taking off her face to reveal it was only a mask. Your right Niels it does."
Seeing Emily floating right in front of him Niels did the only logical thing he could at this point. He fainted face first into the cake.
"Oh my maybe I overdid it just little bit." Schan and Karen's eyes lolled back in their heads as they fainted. "Yyyeeeaaah definitely overdid it."
Slowly Niels opened his eyes to see a bright light in front of him he held his hand up to his face to shield his face.
"Niels!" A heavenly voice called out. "Niels NIELS!" He woke up with a startle in a cold sweat to a face he hadn't seen since...since that day at the funeral home.
"Em-Emmy?"
The girl in the gold halo looked up at him with relief. "Oh thank God your okay I thought I'd scared you to death or something." He looked at her with his eyes wide with shock and his stomach on the edge of throwing up from fear.
"It's okay Niels Don't be afraid I'm not going haunt you. I just wanted to have a little fun was all."
Niels breathed a sigh of relief and rubbed the frosting from his eyes He could believe but standing err I mean floating in front of him was her Emily Cliff not lying in a casket in the ground or hooked up to a bunch of tubes in a hospital but floating right in front of him. Her skin was bright and full of life as if she had never gotten sick at all her hazel eyes still as lively as he remembered.
"It's really you your alive!"
She looked at him and laughed. "Well not exactly alive Niels but I'm here right now." She pointed to the halo above her head."
I-I-I can't believe it! Without a second thought he threw himself into her arms the tears cascading down his cheeks. "I've missed you so much!"
Emmy looked down at him with tears in her eyes too. "I've missed you too Niels."
"I-I don't know what to say" He said as he wiped the tears from his eyes."
"You never were much for small talk Niels"
"This is incredible Schan! Karen! Oh My God that's right."
They hustled over to check on the pair who were still lying out cold in the grass.
"Maybe I should wake them up give them a minute to process everything.".
"Yeah probably a good idea I don't think Schan would react well to waking up to his dead girlfriend."
"Come on Schan wake up buddy!" Niels gently tapped his friends cheek.
"Ugh But Mom I don't want to go to the dentist."
"Schan it's me Niels."
Slowly the dark haired boy rubbed his head and opened his eyes.
"Ow my head."
"Get up dude I've got a lot of explaining to do and I don't want you fainting on me again."
Niels helped his friend to his feet while Emmy went over to go check on Karen.
"Niels! You didn't tell me Kenny's sister was coming with you!"
"I didn't think you'd actually be coming."
"It's fine I've got this. Wake up Karen you were having a bad dream sweetie."
The poor girl squinted her eyes and opened them slowly.
"Where-where am I."
"Shh it's okay you had yourself quite a scare but you'll be alright."
Karen's eyes opened to see Emmy's gentle face looking up at her.
"You!" She cried out with surprise. "Your Niels Friend Emily right? But I thought Niels said you...the little girl looked up to see Emmy's halo sitting above her favorite beanie. "Are you an Angel?"
Emmy looked down and smiled at Karen's question. "Yes yes I am Karen."
"So you must have heard how sad Niels and Schan were and you came to cheer them up?"
Emmy leaned down and whispered in Karen's ear. "Well that and I've got a little surprise for Niels but let's keep that a secret between us girls for now okay?"
Karen nodded: "You can count on me Emily."
"Please call me Emmy all my friends do."
"Oh alright Emmy."
"Hey Karen are you alright now?"
"Looks like Schan's up." She brushed herself off and took several deep breaths. "Okay you can do this Emmy just sit him down and explain slowly and Clearly..."
"E-E-E-Emmy?" Is that you?"
"Well that cat's out of the bag"
"It-it can't be I must have hit my head on a rock or something when I fainted and now I'm having hallucinations or something."
"Is that any way to talk to your girlfriend Schan?"
"This is one powerful Hallucination!"
"It's really her Schan I don't know how or why but it's really her." said Niels.
The floodgates opened on Schan's eyes as he ran into her arms and embraced her.
"EMMY!" He gripped her tight like a newborn baby shaking as the tears soaked her shoulder.
"Shh I know Schan I've missed you too."
Schan said nothing in response he just held onto her like something would snatch her away if let go.
"I've been watching you both ever since I crossed over I've seen what you've both went through." The tears began to fall from her eyes as well.
For the next few moments no one said a thing the tears in their eyes spoke volumes about the heartache they had both endured being separated. finally Schan found enough of his shaking voice to talk."
"How are you back here if your already dead?" He asked.
Emmy wiped the tears from her eyes and said "Well since's it's my birthday and I've missed you guys so much I asked God if I could come down to Earth for a day to spend it with you.
"And he said yes?" Asked Schan.
"Wellllll"
Earlier that Day Emmy walked into God's office to find the creator of all things very busy...playing Titanfall online.
"Are you there God?" The young angel said as she peered through the door to his office."
"Is that you Mary Kay?" Asked the Deity.
"Uh no it's Emmy Sir I actually had a small favor to ask of you it's no real big deal." She tapped her index fingers together nervously.
"Oh yea speak my child what is on your mind?"
"Well it's just my Birthday is today and I kinda wanted to spend it with my close friends back on Earth. I really miss them."
"Oh? Sure whatever here take the Scion just don't scratch the fenders." He tossed the keys to her.
Oh Well uh thanks I'll..just...be...going then. "Emmy quickly made her exit."
Just then an angel burst into God's office.
"My Lord we've got thousands of Yezidis trapped on a mountain by Islamic Militants. they're at risk of dying of hunger and dehydration what should we do?"
"Just put it on my desk I'll try to get to it this afternoon." The Hippo cat lizard creature said. "OH YEAH IN YOUR FACE SATAN! IN YOUR FACE!!!!" He said scoring a kill online.
Down in Hell.
"HOW THE HELL DID HE DO THAT?" Asked the Ruler of Despair as he threw his headset down. "Ugh this is why I prefer Skyrim."
"And that's how it happened."
"Wait how did you know what Satan said about Skyrim if you weren't in Hell Emmy?" Asked Niels.
"Huh how did I know that?" Asked the angel puzzled. "Aw screw it let's get this party started already I promised God I'd be back in 6 hours."
Song Reprise.
"I said I wanna touch the Earth I want to break it in my hands."
The four friends spent the afternoon in the cemetery laughing and sharing memories and catching up with each other.
"I want to grow something wild and unruly I want to sleep on the hard ground."
"They sang Happy Birthday to Emmy and watched as she made a wish and blew out the candles."
"What did you wish for?" Schan asked.
"Ah ah ah if she tells you it won't come true." said Karen. Emmy unsuccessfully tried to stifle a giggle that burst into full out loud laughter."
Schan blushed and rubbed the back of his head. "Uh well who wants Cake?"
"None for me I already had a face full earlier." said Niels. Everyone burst into laughter before cutting up the cake which still had an imprint of Niels face in it.
"In the comfort of your hard arms on a pillow of blue bonnets on a blanket made of stars."
After eating cake the four friends sat and talked for several hours until the sun had begun to set. Emmy lay in the snow in Schan's arms as they watched the sunset.
"I haven't had this much fun in months." Said Emmy "I miss being able to do the things we used to do together Schan."
"I've missed being able to spend time with you Emmy."
They watched as the sun began to sink behind the peaks of the Rockies.
"Oh it sounds so good to me." Song reprise ends.
Emmy stood up and dusted the snow off her jacket.
"You guys I just want to say thank you today was the happiest day I've had since I well you know." I just wanted to say thanks for making this the most wonderful birthday I've ever had." Emmy looked up the sky though she didn't say anything Niels and Schan both knew what she was thinking.
"You have to go back don't you." Said Niels.
Emmy looked at him and said "I do the 6 hours are almost up."
"Please Emmy Don't go!" Said Karen running up to her and hugging her leg with tears in her eyes. "I want you to stay here I don't want Niels and Schan to be sad anymore."
Emmy knelt down and pulled Karen into a hug.
"Hey there it's okay Karen I'm an angel I'll be watching you up in heaven."
"When you get up there can you tell my Guardian angel I said hi?" Karen said in between sniffs.
Emmy looked down at Karen with a smile it never failed to surprise her how much her kindness could bring a smile to anyone's face. Of course Emmy knew exactly who she was talking about everyone in Heaven and Hell did.
"Of course I will Karen." She leaned down and kissed her forehead. "Karen I just want to you to know that just because I have to go back doesn't mean I'm gone forever." Karen sniffled and clung to her tightly. "I promise I'll come back to visit soon. You be strong for all three of us alright?"
Karen finally released her grip and rubbed the tears from her eyes. "Alright." Emmy knelt down and gave her a thumbs up before turning to Niels and Schan.
"Well I guess this is it guys."
Schan suddenly ran forward toward her. "Emmy wait!"
"Huh what is it Schan?" Her question was answered with a peck on the cheek.
"I love you."
"Emmy looked her boyfriend in the eyes and said "Hold on." as she wrapped her arms around his waist."
"Hold on to what?" Schan asked puzzled.
"To me" she answered and suddenly she lifted them both off the ground and into the air.
Schan held onto her for dear life his arms wrapped around her waist. "How about a little warning next time Emmy?"
"How about a kiss instead."
Before Schan could react Emmy pulled him into passionate kiss on the lips as their bodies spun in the air.
Song Reprise.
"Cowboy take me away fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue"
"Set me free oh I pray closer to heaven above and closer to you."
"Closer to you."
"I love you too Schan."
Song ends.
Slowly the two kids descended back to Earth and Schan reluctantly let go of her hand.
"Niels" The brown haired boy with the messy hair turned to his friend.
"Yes Emmy?"
"I believe you asked what I wished for earlier."
"Yeah what was it?"
"Come closer and I'll tell you."
Niels tentatively stepped closer to his old friend cautious of one of Emmy's pranks, instead she whispered in his ear. "It's a special surprise."
"What kind of surprise?"
"You'll see very soon." And with that she hugged him tightly. "Well I've got to go back now I can't put it off any longer."
"I understand Emmy. I'll miss you."
"Aww come on Nielsy don't start your gonna get me started. I know it's been hard on you It's been hard on me too but I promise I'll be watching you above."
Niels released his hug and wiped away the tears "Oh Emmy wait I almost forgot." He reached over to the plot and picked several flowers off her grave. "Happy Birthday I know their not much but..." He was cut off by Emmy as embraced him in a tight hug.
"Oh Niels thank you they're beautiful this is the best birthday present I could ask for."
Niels smiled and released his hug as his close friend ascended back into the skies.
"Goodbye everyone I'll be watching you!"
"Good Bye Emmy."
"Bye"
"Goodbye"
And as suddenly as she had appeared she was gone.
Schan was the first to speak.
"Well come on guys we should probably be getting home too."
"Yeah your right." Niels took one last look at the clouds "Goodbye Emmy I'll always remember you."
Back in Heaven Emily Cliff settled down at her desk to work on a new project.
"Today was the best birthday I could have ever asked for."
She looked over at her birthday present and then over to the picture of her Niels and Schan at North Park Funland.
"And since I'm here for eternity that's saying a lot. I never did tell you my wish did I Niels but that's okay I can always tell next year after all my wish was that I could spend my birthday with you guys every year."
She smiled and looked down at the picture she was drawing it was the four of them together Niels and Schan were riding horses while towing her and Karen on a cloud.
"See you guys next year maybe we'll go on the John Edwards show and scare the douche out of him."
Emmy giggled at the thought of the so called psychic seeing a real ghost on the air and got back to work until she was interrupted by....
"OH MY GOD THEY KILLED KENNY!"
"YOU BASTARDS!"
"Sigh I'll get the air mattress."

So I saw this fav.me/d7usxin on Niels page and it inspired me to write a sequel to Everyone has a Guardian Angel.
Emily Cliff was a talented young artist who was taken before her time after a long battle with cancer. Today August 15th is her birthday and she would have been 25.
Niels your a great artist and I write this for you because I see this is a tough time for you. Hang in there and be strong for both you and Emmy.
And give my regards to her family and friends.

She was so wonderful. I'll never be able to live with myself for having let our friendship grow distant at times. Thank you very much for this.
